We have softsim, which is about $10,000, but it's pretty robust. www.outstart.com. I saw a demo of firefly, which is similar, but has more options. May have been bought out - try a google search.

I wish I had solid data. We're not quite there yet. You can try www.horton.com for information. Bersin and Associates provides research on just about anything, for a price. You might want to try http://www.thiagi.com/ as well. Good luck!

We just converted from paper based to online via our LMS. Explicit instructions and navigation job aids are helpful. Also, you may want to limit number of attempts if possible. They often want to take it over and over until they learn the test instead of learning the material. If you can jumble responses and questions where possible, that helps defer cheating as well. Hope that helps.

We do both. I have generally found response rates for online surveys to be about 50%. However the results have been typically the same. Half the response but consistent feedback. Not enough experience to say that these observations are typical but that has been my experience in transitioning from paper based level 1 evaluation to online.

The only issue I have found with that method is that it is difficult to get people to respond once they have left the session. You have to send numerous reminder e-mails to get them to answer. You might need to tie taking the survey to something in order to get them to respond and respond promptly. I would also recommend no more than 5 days to respond as people tend to forget as time goes by. Hope this helps.

IMHO, ROI has become much easier. Their are two basic pieces of information that we look for. What will attract and retain the most talented employees? Most of the latest surveys say that what employees want is career development and future opportunity. If that is the case, then all we need to do is provide courses that allow employees to develop themselves. Because the question of whether they feel they are being developed is up to them, smiley faces (level 1 evals) is enough. All managment wants to hear about is what are we doing to attract and retain our best employees.

We're changing from a paper-and-pencil evaluation form completed at the end of workshops to evaluations that will be completed online for up to 2 weeks after the workshops. Anyone else make this move? What should we anticipate with response rates, comments, etc.? We're a statewide training system serving thousands. Thanks.

We do both. If the need is generic and we have the $ we purchase off the shelf courses but anything specific we design and build in house. It is enough to keep us pretty busy.

Just a thought.....I was doing some research on gaming as a training tool and discovered Cold Stone Creamery incorporates a virtual reality type game in training new store associates. The article stated they had a lot of success with it.

I agree, ROI has been required less and less from management - but they still want it. I think the reason for this is two fold:

1) Management now sees that to gather ROI is time consuming (ala Phillips/ASTD methods) and adds costs and overhead to a training project.

2) In order to measure true ROI - one can not simply say - lets have training and measure the changes. The training has to be addressing a root cause of a problem area or causeing growth in a positive area of the business that can be both reasonably measured and isolated (meaning that the ROI attributed to the learning intervention had no other influences).

Most have realized in order to just get some training they may have to run through a performance improvement or appreciate inquiry process up front - and many a client has already decided that training is the solution - and do not want to hear about much else. S they back off the ROI requirements. The training 'feels' right - and sometimes it is.

I pose another question back to you -
Do you feel we are ready for an improved method of calculating ROI? Beyond or different than what the ROI Institute proposes? Wouldn't you and management be more likely to seek ROI on training if there was a faster and more efficient means to do so?

We do use training as part of the selected interventions to improve performance. But not to mislead you there is still a tendency to simply add a training band-aid to a performance issue - when other interventions are more suitable. There is not always a complete analysis of performance issue root causes before training is applied as a solution.

This makes training ROI very questionable - unless root cause was determined and goals for change were established which pointed to training as a proper solution.

Haven't you found the same conditions in your work place?
